Vitamin C: A Natural Treatment For Bacterial Vaginosis

Vitamin C is a very powerful, yet under-appreciated, natural treatment for bacterial vaginosis. It can be used to treat bacterial vaginosis in two ways. First, you can use vitamin C to effectively treat an active bacterial vaginosis infection. Second, you can use it to prevent recurring bacterial vaginosis infections.
If you have an active bacterial vaginosis infection, eating much higher than normal quantities of vitamin C in your diet is very helpful at eliminating the infection. However, it is equally important that you eliminate all sugar until the infection passes because the bacteria that cause bacterial vaginosis thrive on sugar. Therefore, you want to get your vitamin C from non-sugary sources. Citrus fruit, guava, strawberries, and cantaloupe are all very high in vitamin C. However, they contain far too much fructose to consume during an active bacterial vaginosis infection (except lemon). You need to concentrate on vegetable sources of vitamin C and fresh lemon juice which has more than two times the amount of vitamin C than oranges.
The best food sources for vitamin C during an active bacterial vaginosis infection are peppers and green vegetables, especially those in the brassica family (kale family). The sugar content is negligible in these vegetables. A perfect meal during an active bacterial vaginosis infection would be a large plate of steamed brocoli with a side of roasted chicken (free range, organic) or wild fish for protein. Another great meal would be stir-fried red, yellow, and green sweet peppers with mushrooms, onion, and garlic served over a bed of quinoa or basmati rice. Parsley and cilantro also have very high concentrations of vitamin C so a tabouli salad made with lots of chopped parsley would be another great choice. You can also add a bit of minced spearmint and/or lemon verbena for their taste and antibacterial properties. Fresh squeezed lemon juice in tabouli salad is sublime. Stemmed asparagus and a baked sweet potato would be another good option, as both contain good amounts of vitamin C.
Vitamin C supplements will not give you the same benefit as eating foods high in vitamin C. However, using a vitamin C supplement as a vaginal suppository by simply by coating it with a culinary oil and sticking it in overnight can be as effective as tea tree oil or hydrogen peroxide douches. Once this dissolves inside your vagina, it will release the vitamin C directly in the environment of the bacteria that are causing the bacterial vaginosis infection and the very powerful antibacterial and antioxidants effects will help cure the infection.
Overall, vitamin C is a very potent natural treatment for bacterial vaginosis.
